Letter Bingo
Letter Bingo is a reading game which is played by four players using the common rules of Bingo. Letters are placed in the middle of the table, children take turns to pick a letter and name it/point at it, and all players look for this letter on their game boards. The first child to find the letter, takes it and places it on the correct cell on their board.
Aims: The child can recognise and name letters (4-5 yrs.).
Resources: the game is made by an adult.
We Write Words
Reading game “We Write Words”
Different words are written on ice lolly sticks, the words have certain purpose (e.g. words containing a particular letter, three-letter words, words with a particular first letter etc.). Different words are written on ice lolly sticks, the words have certain purpose (e.g. words containing a particular letter, three-letter words, words with a particular first letter etc). Children use magnetic letter tiles and place the tiles on the lid of a metal box to create words.
Aims: The child is able to distinguish the first sound in the word, can recognise and name letters (4-6 yrs.).
Resources: magnetic letter tiles, a metal box (re-use of biscuit and chocolate boxes), lolly sticks with words.
Chestnut letters
Chestnuts (conkers) are placed along the lines of pre-drawn letters, alternatively only conkers are used to form letters. NB! Many other things can be used, such as soft balls, cones, pebbles, etc.
Aims: The child can recognise and name letters (3-6 yrs.).
Resources: conkers, pre-drawn letters.
Find the First Letter
Reading game with clothes pegs “Find the First Letter” There are three letters, the child has to choose the first letter of the item or creature depicted in the picture, and attach the clothes peg to this letter.
Aims: The child distinguishes the first sound of the word (5-6 yrs.).
Resources: cards with a picture and three letters, clothes pegs.
